Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
