They're Doing in America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most illuminating and characteristic occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.

He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently a study projected his petroleum strategies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – genuinely, no former commander would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' to 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably definitely not the story of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to evade secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for other people, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy is that if an individual takes your outer garment you should give him your sweater too.

The apparent and clear fact that the Jesus of the gospels advocates for a form of radical love centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity rather a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Best Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the persistent defiance against Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We must have to maintain it, and in the same spirit, with American flags during all protests and calls to the best parts in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or reject?

America is best defended, essentially, by reference to the highest in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to that which renders it special and beautiful, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it imply acting as if the most damaging of both America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it signifies both meekness and faith, a blend that serious American Christians ought to accept.
