Our Leading Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Place.

On the surface, this work may look more like an arduous academic challenge rather than the latest popular music project from an artist who just had a last single was a collaboration with an international pop star. Divided into four distinct parts and sung in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged opus that delves into feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, often by way of the perspective of various saintly figures. The end of a romance—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot upwards here, supported by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within a vast roll call of contributors. The pure audacity by itself makes the work of contemporary artists look rather small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid overly academic posturing feels nothing short of miraculous, with full credit going to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to alchemize historical sounds and modern styles, the stakes feel far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What really raises this fourth album, beyond its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist at her peak, you find a wondrous quality to Rosalía's voice that pulls the listener up in its tornado. Even when she's breaking hearts apart, the listener still want to be alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That exuberant energy shines clearly during the stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, and there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment before a comically over-the-top orchestral surge thuds in with cartoonish impact. The track immediately shifts into the wild track featuring galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The charm with this album lies in the listener never quite understand—nor want to know—where it will go next."

Almost each track ends at a totally different place from how it began. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her previous rhythmic work starts off moody and brooding, with menacing beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

A key achievement on the album is navigating the line between radical innovation and broad accessibility. This is little coincidence that it has achieved the artist's first release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that seems to collect increasingly nagging hooks while it spirals skyward. That feat is repeated by a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its own inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of hidden treasure that takes time to completely explore but never seem like hard work. While other major releases of the year felt like feasting on meal, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the characters at the table, some intoxicated on holy wine, flit between discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
