The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
