Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.

Officers say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then found numerous other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials report initial examinations suggest the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.

City officials stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.

A senior political figure commented the vandalism made him stunned and had to be solved quickly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a assailant targeting people of migrant background in five years prior.
